One of my favorite transcendentalist writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, often referred to "the enormous force of a few words." If you know me personally, you are reading this out of pure curiosity, of what I would know about the enormous power of a few words. For those of you that don't know me, I say that because I am a known linguist, poet, master of the vernacular, and one of the most long-winded human being on this planet. It's OK I spent many years on a path of self discovery, and many thousands of dollars on therapy; only to find that the power to balance and center myself was always just an acceptance away. I had to embrace who I am, accept all my strengths and weaknesses, and believe in my ability to achieve greatness. Only then could I begin my true journey into self, where I could find peace in purpose and purpose in being. My travels have allowed for me to hone my skills, reducing nonproductive hyper-banter down to strategically chosen messages of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Now when I meet people I find that my interest in what they have to say outweighs my will to speak.. There is one word that consistently remains pinned the the top of my favorites, quintessential...
Quin·tes·sen·tial : /ˌkwintəˈsenCHəl(Adj.) Representing the most perfect or typical example of a quality or class...This is a perfect word to describe the concept of an idea. To give it dimensional value, and paint for the mind with sounds that add color, height, width, and depth to the subject of discussion. When we learn to strip away the non-essential and reduce our thoughts and words to what truly matters, we begin to take hold of the principle of simplicity. With so much to do, and only so little time to do it in, we are left with a constant struggle to prioritize and revamp our schedule to be more efficient with the time we have available during waking hours. Most of us just do the obvious, less sleep more tasks, but is that really the answer? At what point does our schedule become restrictive, and even destructive to our growth as individuals and spiritual beings? I propose to you a challenge. Each day you wake, try to empty your mind and just "BE" in the moment of silence, before your days stresses and struggles begin. Forget about yesterday, focus on the now. Then see your day ahead filled with positive people helping working with you towards common goals. Picture that you are met at every would be obstacle with the helping hand of an associate or even a stranger. See yourself act, instead of react to adversity, allowing a calm mind to make good decisions in the moment; uninstructed by negative emotions, poised and ready for anything. Now carry that over into your speech and writing. Be sure to think before you speak and allow your spirit to guide your tongue not you mind. The mind must be drained in order to allow the true self to surface. Practice refining your words writing a description of something meaningful, then break that down using fewer words with greater impact. Then do it again, then again, until you discover the quintessential essence of the subject. Over time you'll be able to use one powerful word to total up the sum of all it's qualities. Do this for 14 days and I promise you it will impact the way you live in ways that you would never imagine. Please post comments to let me know your experiences with this exercise.
